Bee Keeping

The village of Tuckahoe and the NY State has authorized modification of Tuckahoe zoning code (Local Law # 2-2022) to allow for apiaries.

The details can be found in our village website (https://www.tuckahoe.com/village-clerk/pages/bees).

The instructions to become a beekeeper and start a hive in the village can be accessed here and the form is available here.

The necessary forms and instructions have also been posted under resources section of this website.

Styrofoam Ban

Good news folks . Starting Jan 1st 2022, food and packaging container made from Styrofoam (Polystyrene Foam) have been banned in New York state. The Styrofoam packing peanuts have also been banned.

Most of us have seen Styrofoam containers when we order takeout. They are the white clam-shell type containers. Styrofoam is light , breaks easily, and does not biodegrade well, contributing a lot to micro-plastic pollution. Since they are not a candidate for recycling program, banning them is a great decision for our environment and community.

Details about the ban can be found in NYS – DEC website – https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/120762.html

Tuckahoe moving to 100% renewable Energy

Dear village residents, we have joined 27 of our neighboring communities to participate in Sustainable Westchester’s Westchester Power (WP) program. The program has been providing residents and small businesses a clean electricity supply choice since 2016 and has mitigated over 830,000 tons of greenhouse gases. The program provides competitive fixed price electric supply and easy access to NY sourced sustainable, renewable energy.

The default supply for the Village of Tuckahoe will be the 100% renewable energy option, but the program also offers a standard supply option, which is a mix of fossil fuel and renewable energy. You can switch between supply options at any time.

In the next few days, you will be receiving a notification letter with all program details including instructions on opting out of the program. To stay in the program, you need take no action – you will be seamlessly enrolled in the program on your first meter read day starting March 1.

The program is very different from standard ESCO offerings – you are never locked in to your choice and you can change supply options, opt-out, or opt back into the program without any costs or penalties at any time. To do so, please visit www.sustainablewestchester.org/wp/tuckahoe or call their offices at 914-242-4725.

Green energy with westchester power

Tuckahoe has been considering joining 27 of its neighboring municipalities in Sustainable Westchester’s community energy program, known as Westchester Power. This program would help Tuckahoe transition to a clean energy future by increasing the ease, accessibility, and affordability of 100% renewable energy for residents and small businesses in our village.

Representatives from Sustainable Westchester have been reaching out to our community for the past year and had held another info session yesterday for the village residents. Earlier this month (11/9/20), they had presented a detailed plan to our village board.

For those who had missed out, here is the link to that presentation.
